'Star Trek: The Experience' To Close. This makes me sad. My dream of going to Vegas for our tenth anniversary and renewing our wedding vows with a Klingon Elvis impersonator are dashed forever. (the
dwinn, no doubt, is thinking "Thank god...")
I had my first idiotic gardening accident of the year tonight. Nothing compared to the great bush incident of '05, but that one didn't really hurt anything but my pride. No, tonight I went out to put a lid on one of the containers we use for brush and the like, and as I am wont to do, got distracted by breaking down a few more of the big branches we have piled up. Which would have been fine had it not been right at dusk, and peak mosquito time. So I've got a big branch in one hand, clippers in the other, and something big bites my shoulder. Hard.
I wisely do not slap at myself with the hand holding the clippers, nor do I drop them. Nor do I smack myself with the branch. Instead, I drop the branch. Which lands, thick pointy end first, right on the top of my foot. My flip-flop clad foot, seeing as I was only going out to put a lid on a can.
I felt the impact right down to my toes. Literally. While I only have a little scrape and the beginnings of a nice, my toes still feel a little tingly and twitchy, and it's not fun having much weight on the ball of my foot. Ow.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go steal the bubblewrap back from

Happy Birthday, Deeds!

Age is just a number and you make 50 FABULOUS!!
I actually have two mixes for tonight.(eta: the second will go up tomorrow) I promised one to someone to help fill up their new MP3 player, and then I just decided to do this one. Because
fated_addiction made her House/Cam mix last week and it was amazing. And I kept trying to make one, but I just could not get it right, nor could I settle on a theme.
So, this is just a really eclectic collection of all songs recently that have pinged me in one way or another as House/Cam. It ranges from folk to alt. country to hard rock to pop-ish to progressive. No matter what sort of music you like you'll find *something* you like in this.

This is just a nice night at a bowling alley with the team. What makes this even better though is the little flirtations between Vala and Daniel. Disco type bowling. Shakira blasting. Vala dancing. Needless to say, Daniel is a little distracted. I've always loved the image of the ending. That's pretty much it, go read it!

There's about nineteen hours left before the responses to the most recent five-things prompts are revealed. Right now we've got lists from eight people, yay! But we'd always love to see more, and the prompt 'Five things about which Daniel and Sam agreed to disagree' is particularly in need.

Why This Must Be Read:
The beautifully visceral imagery and the deftly interwoven then-and-now stories ought to be reason enough, but that's actually just the starting point here. This short story gives us a compelling look at the consequences of decisions made in the heat of the moment, at the power people who care have to hurt each other just when they need each other the most, and at the journey to forgive those wrongs. Jack's and Sam's emotions are vivid and poignant and real, and if this piece isn't an easy, carefree read, it's still absolutely worth it.

Okay, I guess you can eat it for lunch or dinner or a midnight snack if you're so inclined, but I made it for breakfast. 2 out of 3 kids actively pester me to make this. It's tummy-rubbing delicious.
Rice & Egg Breakfast
Uncooked rice (any kind you like. I use medium grain rice.)
Raw eggs
Seasonings (what do you like with eggs? Salt, pepper, etc.)
Toppings (shredded cheese, bacon crumbles, chopped onion, etc.)
This works best in a non-stick rice cooker prepared for 1-2 people, but feel free to play around with it. For more than 2 people, I'd use a wider-bottomed saucepan so that the egg doesn't sit too thickly on the rice. I don't think deep egg would cook as well.
Rinse & cook rice as normal. While the rice is cooking, beat 1-2 eggs with your seasonings. When the ricer is done with the cook cycle, pour the eggs over the rice (and sprinkle with toppings if you like). DO NOT STIR. Re-cover and allow to stand for ~10 minutes on "keep warm" setting. The hot rice cooks the egg to a wonderfully creamy, cheesy texture.
Serve with sliced fruit and juice spritzers to be extra-fancy.

Despite the icon, no I am not doing a friends cut because I am freaked out by you all LOL
I have a lot of people on my flist that haven't posted in like 2-3 years. I assume they left LJ, so I am going to go ahead and do some trimming.
I'm mainly aiming this at abandoned journals and people that post maybe once a year. Plus there are some people that I never talk to and never talk to me, so I figure we've drifted or just never clicked.
This really isn't aimed at anyone new since I don't know you yet, or people I talk to on a regular basis.
There is always room for misunderstanding though, so if I cut you and you didn't want to get cut, just let me know and I'll add you back. Or just post here if you want me to keep you. Even post here if you are looking to be cut. Maybe I bore you ;)
No hard feelings or anything. Like I said, just let me know. :)

I can't say I'm surprised; is it bad that I'm disappointed? I can think of lots of fictional characters I'd rather be! Maybe the problem is that this one is who I fear I could become:
The text on the results page, which doesn't appear here, says, "A focused advisor whose actions are dictated by almost pure logic, you believe in exploring the fascinating possibilities around you.
"Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." Or the one, I might add.
I keep hearing that some of my students find me intimidating. I learn this on anonymous evaluations and from students who come and say, "So-and-so wants to come see you, but...." I have two chairs for students in my office because some like to come in pairs, and others will only come if a friend accompanies them. I've tried telling my students that I haven't eaten any visitors to my office yet, but I get nervous laughs, at best.
I think my students think I'm Spock, despite my high enthusiasm, sometimes high-speed exhortations about why Beowulf is great or Bede rocks or Chaucer is the hoopiest frood of the whole Middle Ages. (Or maybe it's because I sometimes say things like "hoopy frood" in class, which wins over a small percentage of students wholeheartedly and alienates many of the rest. I try to stop myself.)
Why couldn't I get Marcus (from Babylon 5) like

Back out in the garden today for the first time in a while. It felt great until I started coughing up a lung. I am totally in denial that the cold/sinus infection I've had since last week has started to move in to my chest and throw loud parties. UGH. I hadn't had an asthma attack since March, and after the last two years of no real breaks from the asthma it was utterly fabulous, and last week I had baby attacks every day and a bigger one yesterday and I feel like I've been hit by a truck, not to mention that the stuff coming out of my sinuses would do Stan Winston proud. Fuck you, immune system, fuck you.
On a less disgusting note, there will be Rocky fic tomorrow. The writer brain is being very cooperative these days. Apparently threats of violence do solve everything.

FULL NAME: Amaryllis "Amy" Byrd
SPECIES: Witch
HAIR: pigtails
EYES: big and brown
MARKINGS: She is "tiny" and has a "spritely body". She has "elf" ears, freckles and "pouty" lips.
POSSESSIONS: "a hand-woven flower garland on her head", glasses.
ORIGIN: She went to Hogwarts all along.
CONNECTIONS TO CANON: She sits with the Marauders on the Hogwarts Express in third year and they treat her like garbage, except Peter who has fallen for this sweet girl. She is the reason he begins to part from his friends. She is in Hufflepuff and idolizes Lily Evans. She has lots of friends that span the Houses (except Slytherin).
SPECIAL ABILITIES: She is delicate. She is great at Charms and Arithmancy, she is "a painter, vegetarian, pianist, activist, and all-around flower child that loved Muggle culture yet wanted to grow up to be a wandmaker"
NOTES: I was going to rate this "okay", but she is just too perfect. It's sad because we don't see Sues destined for Peter very often.
( So perfect, such a Sue. )

I went on Ebay and won the auction with those Eureka scripts for probably more than I should but not too bad.
